Plainview Runs To Aid Chairty

Local residents came out in droves to run in the All Rounds Foods 10k Run for Aspire recently at Mattlin Middle School.

Among the award winners from the local area were 13-year-old Christian Schiavone of Plainview, who scored second in the 14 and under age group; Alison Meyer of Plainview, second female in the 14 and under age group; Evan Melle of Plainview, third in the 14 and under age group; Matthew Wontz of Bethpage, who scored with third place honors in the 0-34 age group; Barry Jerson of Plainview, who scored first in the 65-69 age group; and Howard Kestenbaum and Odd Sangesland, both of Plainvew, who scored second and third in the 80-84 age group.

After a one year hiatus, Bellmore Striders stalwart Chris Mammone, who was the first place finisher overall in the 2010, 2012 and 2013 editions of the All Round Foods 10K Run for Aspire, returned to his winning ways. Mammone blasted his way to the finish line in 32:58, a scant four seconds in front of Mike Petrina of the Sayville Running Company. Joe Grieco, 22, of We Are Athletes finished third overall and, for the second straight year, Boyd Carrington was fourth overall and first Master, and 2013 overall winner Dan Gargaro was sixth overall in what was one of the most competitive races on Long Island in the past year.

On the women’s side, the performance of Leonora Petrina was nothing short of incredible. Leo crossed the finish line in 33:39, breaking the race record set by Angela Hearn in 1989 by more than a full minute. Runners-up Tara Wilson, Marilyn Caulfield, Kelly Perno Grosser and Kathy Martin also turned in strong performances, but none of them was within four minutes of Petrina. Grosser’s 39:47 set a new record for the women’s 60-64 age group.

Continuing the theme of helping young people who have had a rough break in life, the Running Club welcomed Friends of Karen as the new charitable beneficiary of the Aspire 10k.
