Dinner & A Movie: No Impact Man
This seriously engaging film, No Impact Man, looks at one armchair liberal’s decision to put his money where his mouth is and go off the grid for one year—while still living in New York City—and see if it’s possible to make no net impact on the environment. In other words, no trash, no toxins in the water, no elevators, no subway, no products in packaging, no air-conditioning, no television . . . Discussion led by Amy Peters (Sea Cliff Co-op), Mary Callanan (Three Castle Gardens), and Annetta Vitale (Reed Channel Farm). Films on sustainable living are showing on Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at the Garden City Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island on 38 Old Country Rd. Each film is followed by a discussion led by a local solutions expert. Tickets are $15 per night ($12 /ticket for ages 55+ and students with ID). This includes the movie, dinner and discussion. Sweet to Lick of Williston Park, a vegan bakery, is providing a soup dinner. For more information or to purchase tickets for the movie series, call 516-741-7304 Locally Long Island and the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island are sponsors of the series.

Making A
Beautiful Noise
On Friday, May 2, Gathering Time and Mara Levine will perform at Garden Stage at Garden City’s Unitarian Universalist Congregation at 8:30 p.m., preceded by an open mic at 7:30. With their seamless vocal blend, precision guitar playing and inspired percussion, Stuart Markus, Hillary Foxsong and Gerry McKeveny display deep roots in 1960s folk and folk-rock, with a healthy dose of traditional folk in the mix. The year since their last appearance at Garden Stage has been one of evolution and achievement for Gathering Time. In March 2013, the trio welcomed Long Island music veteran Gerry McKeveny into the fold. The group has been touring in the Northeast behind its most recent CD, When One Door Closes. Called “one of the best singers of her generation” by Christine Lavin, Mara Levine creates beautiful interpretations of folk songs. Currently on the road supporting her second album, Jewels and Harmony, Levine is receiving stellar reviews and had the #1 album on the Folk DJ chart for January 2013. For more information on Gathering Time and Mara Levine, please visit www.gathering-time.com and www.maralevine.com respectively. Tickets for the show are $20 with advance reservation, $22 without. For reservations and information, please email calendar@uuccn.org, call 516-248-8891 or visit www.gardenstage.com and/or www.uuccn.org
