When Taco Bell announced that its beef is made up of 88 percent beef and 12 percent of other things, the public’s collective imagination went wild, although it didn’t stop most people from driving through for a Double Decker Taco on their lunch breaks.
Well TB fans, the Bell is coming clean about the other 12 percent of its ingredients, stating on its website that the company goes “to great lengths to be open about the ingredients we use, and want you to know the truth.”
As for the ingredients, Taco Bell says its beef includes: Maltodextrin (sugar), Torula (yeast), Modified Corn Starch (a thickener), Soy Lecithin (a binding ingredient), Sodium Phosphates (for texture), Lactic Acid (to manage acidity), Caramel Color & Cocoa Powder (for color), and Trehalose (sugar).
“They do have weird names – perfect for tongue twisters!” the company states. “But these ingredients are completely safe and approved by the FDA. They’re common ingredients also found in food items at your grocery store.”
Taco Bell also says MSG is never used in its food and all meat is USDA-inspected.
