The National Honor Society of MacArthur High School in Levittown inducted 111 students during a traditional candlelighting ceremony in the auditorium. The evening was punctuated with words of wisdom, ceremonial milestones, musical interludes and the honoring of teachers and staff.
“You have gotten off to a very good start; what happens from now on is up to you,” said Principal Kathleen Valentino. “We have many people here wanting to help you along that path and it gives us much pleasure to do so.”
Board of Education trustee Michael Pappas expressed his pride in the inductees. “Being inducted into the National Honor Society means you have made it,” he said. “The future is unlimited for you.”
NHS President Andrew Spinelli, Vice President Brianna DeVincentis, Recording Secretary Brian Zilli, Treasurer Jennifer Race and Corresponding Secretary Erin McCarthy lit the ceremonial candles, representing the tenets of scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship prior to the induction of new members. With the candles lit, the inductees were asked to raise their right hand and take an oath before being called to the stage to receive their certificates.
Before the conclusion of the ceremony, the National Honor Society named Gail Fagan, a 20-year high school administrative assistant, as this year’s Community Advocate for her availability to students. Laura McCue, a 17-year social studies teacher, was named Teacher of the Year.
