The Garden City Police Department is one of just three departments across Long Island to receive a crime-fighting grant administered by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.
Intended to help reduce, solve and prevent crime, the $30,000 grant will specifically enable the department to fund special patrols and purchase equipment to more effectively target car larcenies and burglaries.
“We place a high emphasis on these crimes and this will assist us in our ongoing efforts to make the community safer,” Garden City Police Commissioner Kenneth O. Jackson said. “I’d like to thank Inspector Michael Doyle and Sergeant Bill Grimes for their assistance in the preparation of a thorough and comprehensive application.”
Mayor John J. Watras and Deputy Mayor Nicholas P. Episcopia added, “We are pleased to receive this supplement as we are most diligent in preventing and fighting crime in this Village.”
The state grants, which total nearly $1 million, were awarded to 27 police departments and four sheriffs’ offices in 21 counties throughout New York.
Department of Criminal Justice Services Executive Deputy Commissioner Michael C. Green said, “Crime doesn’t stop at a county, city, town or village border, and giving assistance to smaller agencies that otherwise wouldn’t have the resources like this is crucial to public safety.”
The Rockville Centre Police Department and the East Hampton Police Department were the other two agencies on Long Island to receive grants.
