Jericho Charity Recognized

sandyJericho-based LI Cruizin’ For A Cure had been given the Lee Iacocca Award recognizes annual car show and its mission to spread awareness, promote early detection and find a cure for prostate cancer.

Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure is the only annual car show on the East Coast to promote prostate cancer awareness and provide free onsite PSA screening tests for the early detection of prostate cancer.

This unique car show, with a mission to help fund research to find a cure for prostate cancer, has been honored with the prestigious 2014 Lee Iacocca Award. The Lee Iacocca Award has been said to be “the most coveted award on the classic car circuit.” The Iacocca Family Foundation is dedicated to the mission of finding a cure for Type II Diabetes. Since 2006 the award has been given to car shows that have achieved something admirable for their local community.

Cruizin’ For A Cure Car Show was selected for its promotion of prostate cancer awareness and for raising funds for prostate cancer research through the sponsorship of an all-volunteer run car show for eight consecutive years.

“The Lee Iacocca Award is recognition of the Cruizin’ For A Cure committee members, volunteers, many of whom are prostate cancer survivors, and the hundreds of car exhibitors who take part in our shows to make them huge success stories. The efforts to support prostate cancer research, promote early detection screening, and raise funds to support research programs is extraordinary. It’s most heartening for our organization to be acknowledged for our mission and our accomplishments as a nonprofit group here on Long Island. Receiving this award just motivates us to work even harder to help researchers find a cure for a dreaded disease that strikes men in our communities and communities nationwide,” said Sandy Kane, Chair of LI Cruizin’ For A Cure.

The 2014 car show will be held on Sunday, September 14th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sears Auto Center parking lot, in Hicksville. Over 3,500 people are expected to attend and more than 600 cars and vehicles will be exhibited at the all-volunteer, nonprofit group’s ninth annual event. In 2013 $20,000 was donated to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for scientific research to find a cure for prostate cancer. Allstate Insurance will be a major sponsor once again this year.

As in the past, the next show will have a special tent where free PSA prostate cancer screening tests will be conducted by Winthrop University Hospital. Men with elevated PSA readings will be referred to their physicians for follow-up. Volunteers wearing blue L.I. Cruizin’ tees will be available to encourage men to take advantage of the onsite free blood-screening tests.
