The Walk Street Tavern is a staple in the Village of New Hyde Park, the building having been around since the mid 1880s. Once used as a general store, an inn and a post office, the building is now a popular bar and restaurant that is considered a community favorite.
“This building has been a fixture in the village forever,” said Walk Street Tavern owner Jimmy Tubbs. “It was used as a post office for many years in the 20th century, a bar up until 1943 and opened as Henry’s Inn in 1971, before Walk Street took over in 2008.”
Tubbs and partner Robert Kloepfer Jr. renovated the building in 2008, seeking to carry on the building’s history as a place residents could go to relax and grab a bite to eat.
“We are a restaurant with a family style pub atmosphere,” said Tubbs. “We have a full menu with daily dinner specials and pub type food and also have two private dining rooms for private parties and a huge outdoor dining area and beer garden.”
Walk Street offers up a reasonably priced selection of hamburgers, wraps, salads and appetizers on their menu. Prices range from $7 for appetizers such as chicken wings to $20 for a porterhouse steak with all the fixings. They also offer a children’s menu for the little customers.
If you’re a sports fan, you’ll love the seven flat screen TV’s in the restaurant’s main room. You can come down and watch almost any sporting event in high definition alongside other loyal sports fans.
Friday and Saturday nights are exciting at Walk Street. Bands and individual performers entertain the crowd with live music ranging from old time rock and roll to today’s current hits. shows usually begin at 9 p.m.
Walk Street features a jazz jam session on the last Tuesday of each month, a big hit amongst bar goers,
Tubbs is a Mineola resident who works as a realtor with Laffey Real Estate in Williston Park. He has been involved with restaurant operations for many years, working at one time as a busboy, waiter and bartender.
“I just want people to come down, have a bite to eat and enjoy themselves in a comfortable setting in a place that has a lot of historical value here in New Hyde Park,” said Tubbs.
