The Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District’s budget passed as a result of the election held on Tuesday, May 20. A total of 932 voters were in favor of the budget (Proposition #1), while 357 were opposed.
The other two propositions also passed: Expenditure of Capital Reserve Funds (Proposition #2) received 903 votes in favor and 301 opposed, and the Public Library Budget (Proposition #3) earned 951 “yes” votes to 238 “no” votes.
Incumbent Ann Marie Longo was re-elected and Michael Castellano was elected to the school board in the uncontested election of trustees.In addition, Gerard O’Grady was elected to the board of the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Public Library.
The final budget number of $54,578,478 represents an increase of 2.01 percent over the current year’s budget; this is the lowest expenditure budget increase in at least 15 years.
“The Board of Education and Administration greatly appreciate the support of the entire Oyster Bay-East Norwich Community in approving the budget for the 2014-15 school year,” said Superintendent Dr. Laura Seinfeld. “We are so pleased that we now have a spending plan that maintains all District programs as we strive for continuous improvement and increased opportunities for all students. The community’s approval of the Capital Reserve projects enables us to maintain and update district facilities including athletic fields. We would also like to thank Mr. James Robinson for his service on the Board of Education and we welcome Dr. Castellano back to this important leadership role.”
