Author Visits Baylis Students

J. Irving Baylis Elementary School in Syosset recently celebrated its third annual Literacy Week with a visit from biographical children’s author-illustrator Bonnie Bader. She discussed her books with students, giving them a glimpse into her writing process. Bader also participated in a staff breakfast where she talked about narrative nonfiction with the school faculty. The visit was sponsored by the PTA, which brings a different author to the school each year to talk to students.
There were several other activities throughout the week, which ran under the theme “Who Are You?” and was inspired by Bader’s books. Former Baylis students from Syosset High School visited the school to read to each class. After reading, they discussed how to analyze a character based on actions and dialogue. Additional events included DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) readings, Love Your Book Day, and visits from district personnel.
