The Board of Education has begun searching for a new Superintendent of Schools following Maureen Bright’s decision that she will be retiring from the position when her contract expires June 30, 2015.
At a recent meeting, trustees voted to employ a local firm to find a replacement superintendent. The board is currently sending out a Request for Proposal.
Board president Phil Heckler says that the board is hoping to get into the recruitment process in earnest over the summer, to find a “progressive person who can help implement Common Core and budget challenges.” Heckler noted that the board would ideally like a decent overlap period so that the new candidate would be able to learn from Bright before she leaves when her contract expires next June.
Bright has been at the Hicksville School District for 22 years; 12 of them as superintendent. She says retiring is “bittersweet.”
“I have deeply appreciated this opportunity to serve this wonderful community,” Bright said. “I felt however, at this time in my life it is important to make my family my greatest priority.”
She says her superintendent career has been “most fulfilling.”
“The countless rewarding experiences, the opportunity to work with outstanding professionals, the incredibly supportive parents and community residents and the thousands of curious and amazing students I have met have enriched my life immeasurably. I will miss them all,” she said.
During her final year as superintendent, she says she is looking forward to implementing the many initiatives planned for the ’14-’15 school year.
