The Farmingdale School District is proud to announce that Leah Ragno and Elijah Mas have been named Farmingdale High School’s Class of 2014 Valedictorians. Leah and Elijah earned a grade point average higher than 105 during their four-year academic careers at Farmingdale High School.

“Leah is an excellent student, extremely self-motivated and is a tremendous role model for our entire student body,” said Glen Zakian, Farmingdale High School Principal. “Not only has she devoted her time to academics, but has been an outstanding presence in our school community and in the greater Farmingdale community.”

Leah was a vital member of the school’s Science Olympiad Team, Environthon program and the Farmingdale High School’s Marching Band. In addition, she was inducted into the National Honor Society and the French Honor Society.  Leah interned at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital in New York City for four years where she served as a patient representative and assisted in patient escort services.  She also volunteered for the Maria Regina Innkeepers and Mary Brennan Inn Soup Kitchen organizations. Leah will attend the University of Pennsylvania in the fall to pursue a career in medicine.

“Elijah is a true scholar, active leader and a self-motivator.  He continues to impress me with his devotion to learn and his drive to succeed,” said Lisa A. Jensen, Farmingdale High School Guidance Counselor. “Elijah’s accomplishments have spoken for themselves as he has challenged himself in the most rigorous classes our school has to offer.”

Elijah is an Advanced Placement Scholar and will receive an Advanced Regents Diploma with a Mastery in Mathematics and Science upon graduation. Outside the classroom, Elijah was president of Farmingdale High School’s National Honor Society Chapter and was captain of the school’s Environmental Competition Team. He is also a member of the school’s Science Olympiad and Mathletes teams, and is actively involved in martial arts and music in the community. Elijah will attend Yale University in the fall to study astrophysics.
