Rocket Competition

Open to 3rd-8th graders. Participants are invited to build a rocket in the museum workshop. Add a parachute, streamers, wings, or fins to keep your rocket aloft. The bottle rockets will be filled partially with water, attached to an air compressor, and then launched off the museum’s launch pad with the guidance of museum staff. Limit one rocket per participant. The goal of this contest will be to keep your bottle rocket in the air for as long as possible. Compete to win a rocket trophy. Free with museum admission, pre-registration is required. Rocket launch is weather permitting. Should the weather be unfavorable, registered participants and Scouts will participate in rocket building workshops. Spring Brunch

On Sunday, June 8, the Garden City Republican Club will be hosting its First Annual Spring Brunch from 10 a.m. to noon at Calogeros Restaurant on 919 Franklin Ave. in Garden City. For reservations, please mail a check for $50 payable to the Garden City Republican Committee, P.O. Box 223, Garden City, NY 11530. Sponsorships are available at %250 which includes two tickets and the prominent display of the sponsor’s name. If you cannot attend, donations are most welcome.

Chamber Of Commerce Luncheon

At 11:30 a.m., the Garden City Chamber of Commerce will being holding its 2014 season finale luncheon at the Garden City Hotel. The luncheon’s keynote speaker will be  Bruce Ratner, executive chairman of Forest City Ratner Companies and developer of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Ratner will speak on the much anticipated redevelopment of the Nassau Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum. With construction to begin in 2015, the building will open in 2016 with an expected schedule to exceed 300 events per year. The season finale luncheon will also include the traditional showcase of various chamber member businesses to begin at 11:30 a.m. and continue throughout the reception/networking period. Luncheon will be served promptly at 12:30 p.m. Early reservations are suggested at $65 per person and may be made by calling the Chamber at 516-746-7724, ext. 101.  Checks made payable to the chamber may be mailed or dropped at 230 Seventh St., Garden City, NY 11530.  Credit cards will be accepted by telephone of fax at 516-746-7725. The Hidden Language Of The Soul

On Thursday, June 12, Friends of the Garden City Public Library will sponsor a free Russian folk dance program by “Barynya” at 1:30 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library located at 60 Seventh St. Ensemble Barynya will perform Russian, gypsy, Jewish, Cossack, Ukrainian dance, song and music. Mikhail Smirnov is the artistic director and founder of Ensemble Barynya which is based in New York City. He will give a short explanation of each dance during the program. Dances will be performed in different sets of beautiful hand-made costumes inspired by the place where the dance originated. The Russian music, dance & song ensemble Barynya, established in the year 1991, is a world-renowned group that enjoys exalted stature as the premier Russian folk ensemble. The dance troupe has been invited to perform at some of the most prestigious cultural venues in the USA, including Carnegie Hall, the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, the Smithsonian Institute of America in Washington D.C., the United Nations, and the Russian Embassy in Washington D.C. Priority will be given to adult Garden City residents by presenting your Garden City Public Library card at the program room door. Non-residents will be accommodated on a space available basis 10 minutes before showtime. No saved seats. Limited parking. No tickets are required. Please, no buses. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. •Support group for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

•Support group for women post treatment will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

•Support group for young women with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

•Support group for women with metastatic breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

•A telephone support group for women with breast cancer will be held weekly for eight weeks from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Furniture Needed

The A.T.Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop at 109 Eleventh St. in Garden City is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture and show it to Maryann Caterino at the shop (516-746-8900). Consignees are paid 50 percent of the selling price. The shop is conveniently located on the lower level of The Garden City Historical Society Museum. All proceeds from the A.T.Stewart Consignment Shop go towards the maintenance and upkeep of the Garden City Historical Society Museum.
