Chris Wasson, of the 14 and under Long Island Prospects tossed the gem in his team’s semi-final playoff against Port Washington en route to their championship victory. With solid defense behind him, team leader Wasson demonstrated fantastic command and a dominant fastball using just 72 pitches and collecting eight strikeouts in sitting down twenty-one straight batters, said his coach Robert Wasson.

“He is one of our better pitchers, but a perfect game is not something anyone expects,” said the coach. “By the fourth inning, everyone became aware of what was going on. That something special was taking place. Of course, no one said anything. At that point, it’s business as usual. Just get the job done.”

Coach Wasson said his pitcher stayed by himself in the dugout for the majority of the game. And his teammates left him alone, focused on the task at hand.

“There’s the unwritten rule that you do not say anything about a perfect game as it’s coming together,” said the coach. “And the rest of the team was squarely focused on making every out. No one wants to be the guy that screws up a perfect game.”

Chris Wasson tossed 55 strikes and 17 balls. In the final inning, Wasson struck out the first two, then forced a fly-out to end the game and claim his gem.

“Then the game was over, the kids reacted like we won the World Series,” said coach Wasson. “We were estatic.”

After the perfect game, the Prospects went on to beat the Brentwood Braves to win the tournament.
