The Town of North Hempstead will once again be holding summer “Composting Cooperative” and “Recycle the Rain” classes. The town will be offering nine classes throughout the summer, each with a composting and rain barrel session.
“The Town of North Hempstead is committed to teaching our residents and providing them with educational tools and programs needed to helped preserve our environment for future generations,” said Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “The Composting Cooperative and ‘Recycle the Rain’ programs are simple and easy ways to go green at home.”
North Hempstead’s “Recycle the Rain” water conservation program allows residents to purchase 50-gallon rain barrels at a discounted rate of $50. The rain barrels can recycle as much as 1,800 gallons of storm water during in a single summer season.The Composting Cooperative provides residents with an instructional class along with a composter at the reduced rate of $50. By using a composter, residents can create organic material for their soil by reusing kitchen waste that would ordinarily end up in landfills.
Residents who are interested in participating in either program are given an instructional class held at Clark Botanic Garden, located at 193 I.U. Willets Road in Albertson. Classes are approximately a half hour each and are held back-to-back, with the “Recycle the Rain” classes being held first, followed by the Composting Cooperative program.

Thursday, June 12 at 7 and 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, June 28 at 10 and 10:30 a.m.
