Audubon Society Nature Program
Madagascar Conservation Through Community with James Herrera, 7 p.m. The discussion will focus on conservation in Madagascar, specifically a community-management focused conservation research and development project, partnering with people from the communities bordering the forest and landowners. Learn how the project is using biodiversity education, training in sustainable agriculture and agroforestry, reforestation, and public health projects to improve the standard of living of local impoverished populations that rely on the forest for their livelihoods. Through community empowerment and capacity building, the goal is to encourage a new sense of stewardship at the local-level so that the people that truly interact with the forest manage it and benefit from it. Garden Tour
The Main Street Association of Oyster Bay is hosting a Garden Tour on June 13, (rain date, Monday June 16) of four breathtaking gardens around the Oyster Bay area, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; followed by a luncheon at Periwinkles Garden Café located at the Hay Barn in Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be limited parking at the gardens so car pooling is encouraged. Please meet at Roosevelt Beach and leave your cars there for the duration of the tour. Fees: $60 for the Garden Tour; $85 for the tour and lunch (includes parking fee at Planting Fields). Children’s Nature Program
Join Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon at Bailey’s Arboretum to read a story about animals that come out at night, make a fun craft, then take a walk outside on the trails as it starts to get dark. Bring a flashlight or headlamp, and remember to wear clothes/shoes that are weather and woods appropriate. Group size limited to 20. For ages 5 to 10. No unregistered siblings please. Artist’s Retrospective Exhibit
The Oyster Bay Historical Society, 20 Summit St. presents an art exhibit by Oyster Bay resident Gregory Reid opening on June 13 in the Koenig Center. His retrospective exhibit, Echoes: Voices from the Mystics runs through Sept. 5. Primarily self-taught from a young age, Reid’s impressionist work describes his need to paint as a way to release the energy discovered when seeking truth and inspiration from the natural world and the people he encounters. Works on display are for sale with a portion benefiting the OBHS. The reception is from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information call the society at 922-5032.
Nature After Dark
Held at Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center at 7:30 p.m. Ages 7+. 134 Cove Rd., Oyster Bay. For more information: 516-922-3200, gtudda@audubon.org. In nature, many animals begin to wake up after you have gone to bed. Spend an evening at the sanctuary for a live animal show with the nocturnal residents. Following is a night hike to search for these mysterious creatures while doing activities to challenge your senses in the dark. $7 members/ $10 non members.

It’s National “Get Outdoors Day,” and what better way to spend it than with raptors. The Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary is home to many birds of prey including hawks, owls, falcons, and a vulture, that can no longer live on their own in the wild. Come out to meet and learn about some of these amazing animals from a knowledgeable naturalist. $5 members/ $8 non-members. 1 p.m. All ages.
Dimancescu Book Talk
The Oyster Bay Historical Society hosts a book signing for The Forgotten Chapters: My Journey into the Past by Katherine Dimancescu, at 1 p.m. A descendant of the Underhill, Townsend, Wright and Feakes families, she will discuss her genealogical work while highlighting some of the family-research resources both in New England and in the United Kingdom that have proved helpful to her. Growing Through Grief
At the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Public Library. Loss can come in many forms – the death of a loved one, loss of a job, a change in the health or physical capabilities of ourselves or our family members, divorce, loss of relationships and even the loss of our sense of self. This workshop will teach people some skills they can use while experiencing loss, the benefits of working with support groups, and how coaching can assist those on the path of the unexpected turns that life often presents. The bus trip to Hyde Park, NY: Culinary Institute of America & the Home of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt will be on Friday, Nov. 14, so sign up now. The Oyster Bay-East Norwich Public Library and the Life Enrichment Center at Oyster Bay will present a trip with Jim Marino of Oyster Bay Travel. Visit the Culinary Institute of America and the Home of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Price is $90 per person, which includes the bus, lunch and admission to FDR’s House. The North Shore Assembly of God, 84 Orchard St., Oyster Bay is operating a new food pantry for the community. It is meant to supplement the growing needs of the community.
