A Syosset man surrendered to detectives Monday following a hit-and-run fatality that left a 13-year-old girl with Down syndrome in Levittown dead.
On June 15 at 12:02 a.m., police say Bryanna Soplin was crossing Hempstead Turnpike from the south to north side at Gardiners Avenue when she was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike.
Police say Soplin was transported to Nassau University Medical Center with head and body trauma and was pronounced dead by hospital staff at 4:30 a.m.
The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and was last seen traveling eastbound Hempstead Turnpike, then northbound on to the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway.
Police say 48-year-old Michael Elardo turned himself in to police on June 16. Elardo is charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Bail was set at $1 million at Elardo’s arraignment Tuesday morning.
Elardo will appear in Nassau First District Court on June 19.
