Cassano Heads To Academy

Each year, Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy has the opportunity to nominate outstanding local students to attend the U.S. Military Service Academies. This year, 11 students nominated by the Congresswoman received offers of appointments to one of the Service Academies—the Merchant Marine Academy, the Air Force Academy, the Naval Academy or the Military Academy at West Point. One of these students, Garden City’s Michael Cassano, will graduate from Garden City High School this month and will be attending the U.S. Naval Academy.

Cassano participated in a rigorous application interview process which looked at a number of factors including academic performance and extra-curricular activities.

“It is always a privilege to meet the bright young men and women who are eager to serve our country by attending one of our nation’s prestigious service academies,” said Rep. McCarthy. “These young men and women, along with our current forces serving around the globe, are the future of our country,” the congresswoman continued. “I was pleased to nominate Michael, and I congratulate him and his family for all of their hard work throughout this process. I will closely follow Michael’s career and I wish him all the best as he serves our country.”

Rep. McCarthy recently hosted an event to congratulate these students, and their families, as they prepare to embark on this journey. Each appointee received a journal in which the congresswoman encouraged them to write about their experiences during their first year in the academy.
