Herricks Burglar Poses at Utility Worker

A burglar posing as a utility worker talked his way into a 79-year-old Herricks woman’s home, where he stole her jewelry, Nassau County police said.

The victim answered a knock at the door of her Pine Street home, where a man claiming to work for National Grid and wearing a yellow work vest and a yellow construction hat said that he needed to check her home for a gas and water leak following a gas explosion at 12:40 p.m. Friday, police said.

The suspect told the victim to turn on the faucet in the kitchen while the was alone in a bathroom near the master bedroom for 20 minutes and then fled, police said.

The victim discovered assorted gold jewelry missing from her jewelry box shortly later, police said.

A police spokeswoman confirmed that there were in fact no gas explosions reported at the time of the burglary.
