The pilot of small plane reportedly died Monday morning when the aircraft crashed into the Long Island Sound, according to local authorities and news reports.

The pilot’s identity has not been released. His death was reportedly confirmed by Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley, according to SoutholdLocal.com.

The U.S. Coast Guard, which was alerted to the downed plane by another aircraft, said the small, white, experimental plane, crashed just before 9 a.m. about eight miles north of Mattituck Inlet. The plane’s parachute was deployed, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The U.S. Coast Guard and rescue crews from Suffolk County Marine and Riverhead and Southold Emergency Medical Services all responded.

The Federal Aviation Administration described the aircraft as an amateur-built, single-engine, fixed wing Raven.

The FAA said it was told by the U.S. Coast Guard that the plane was found submerged in the water.

“Agencies are assessing the situation and the cause of the accident is currently under investigation,” the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement.

Southold Town Police has not returned a call for comment.
