The Varsity Baseball Team finished the season with a league record of 11-3-1. In the playoffs, the team swept Carle Place in a best of three set to advance to the county finals vs. Wheatley at Hofstra University. The team finished the season as County runner-ups. The team was a nice combination of veteran varsity leaders and new comers to the varsity with six senior players and four freshmen on the squad. Along with four juniors, the team maintained the winning ways of a program that has won the league championship 7 out of the last eight years and won the county championship 6 of those years. Senior Berkeley Golon, Junior Jackson O’Neill, and Junior Stephen Spiegel received All-County honors. Senior Robbie Venegas and Freshman Harrison Treble received All-League honors. With two All-County pitchers coming back and four freshmen going into their second varsity season mixed with the other juniors and new players coming up from another successful JV season, the team expects to continue to work towards the goal of another county title next season.
The Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse Team had a tremendous season finishing at 8 and 6. The 2014 Baymen were led by captains Senior Devin Victory, Senior Collin Martinez, and Junior Chris Jespergard. The team went 5 and 2 in the non-league with impressive wins over Roslyn, New Hyde Park, and Sewanaka. In 2013, the Baymen were voted the Most Improved Team in Nassau County, a season which found them in the playoffs in their second year. However, thirteen senior graduated leaving many holes to fill on the roster. With strong senior leadership from Victory, Martinez, and Mikey Schuler, and talented underclassmen the Baymen didn’t miss a beat. Freshman Brian Schindler stepped into the starting goaltender role and played like a seasoned veteran all season. Honorable Mention All-County attacker Collin Martinez led the team in scoring again this year and graduates as the school’s all-time leading scorer with over 145 career points. Junior Tom Carchietta earned All-Conference honors for his work at midfield and scoring over 50 points. Junior defender Nick Orlowski was named All-County for the second straight year. He is one of the best all-around long sticks in Nassau County. The future is very bright for Oyster Bay Boys Lacrosse and with hard work over the summer the plan is to make it back to the playoffs in 2015.
It was another great season for the Varsity Boys Tennis Team. The team comprised very motivated and enthusiastic athletes ranging from 7th to 12th grade, from beginners to advanced. The players got along very well and improved day by day. They were ferocious competitors fighting for every point in every game. The returning players cannot wait for next season to build on their success.
At the News 12 Scholar Athlete Dinner, Rebecca Layne and 29 other scholar athletes were honored with $1,000 scholarships and other gifts. Rebecca was All-State in Soccer and All-County in Lacrosse.
Caroline Kelly received recognition as Nassau County’s National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association female nominee. She filled out an application, wrote an essay about the impact sports have had on her life, and provided a resume. She, along with a boy from Cold Spring Harbor, had their applications submitted to the state. While they did not advance further, they were given $100 scholarships. This year Caroline was an All-County Volleyball and All-County Softball player and an All-Conference Basketball player.
Every season the academic averages of all varsity sports teams are taken collectively and each team whose average is greater than 90% is honored with the Scholar/Athlete Team distinction by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA). In a remarkable testament to the well rounded OBEN student, all nine Spring Varsity Teams earned this prestigious award.
The Girls’ Lacrosse team led the pack with an impressive team average GPA of 95.981 followed closely by Girls’ Track and Field with a 95.329. The Class B Nassau County Champion Girls’ Softball Team also excelled with a 95.261 average, as did Boys’ Lacrosse with 92.272. The Boys’ Tennis Team registered a 91.038 team average. Rounding out the field were Golf with a 90.931 average, Boys’ Track and Field with 90.838 and Boys’ Baseball with 90.661.
