Seniors and Books At The Beach

Böcker

North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and Town Council members announced the launching of a FunDay Monday senior book club called “Books at the Beach.” This pilot program will put Amazon Kindle e-readers into the hands of more than 30 seniors who will then meet to discuss the book “The Big Crowd” by Kevin Baker. The book club will culminate with a visit from the book’s author sometime in August. In addition, training will be offered for those who are not familiar with the device.

“A good book at the beach is always a wonderful summertime treat,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “I am excited that we are able to pilot this new program for our seniors as part of our FunDay Monday program.”

Lee Fertita, a senior specialist at the Port Washington Library, will join the club as the moderator for book discussions.

“Books at the Beach” will meet on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington during the regular FunDay Monday program, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The club will be comprised of two sessions with 16 members each.  Section A will meet July 21, August 4, and 18; Section B will meet July 28, August 11, and August 25. Participating seniors will be asked to read the selected book over the summer and participate in three on-site discussions at North Hempstead Beach Park.

“The Big Crowd” is the club’s book selection.  The book hinges on the great unsolved murders in organized crime history.  In the Sunday New York Times Book Review, reviewer Scott Turow commented, “Baker’s writing is strong–energetic, precise and especially notable for a parade of metaphors and similes…the novel succeeds in creating a compelling imagined world.”
