Long Island gardeners – adults and children – are invited to bring their home-grown tomatoes to the 17th Annual Hicks Nurseries Tomato Contest to be held on Sunday, Aug. 24, at the nursery in Westbury.
Prizes will be awarded for heaviest red tomato, largest circumference red tomato, tiniest red tomato and most unusual tomato of any color
Entries will be accepted at 10 a.m. on the day of the contest only and judging will begin promptly at 11 am. Each contestant can win in only one category. Tomatoes must be ripe with no signs of rot and not be frozen or previously frozen.
Hicks Nurseries is also encouraging children to bring in their “own-grown” tomatoes. Each child, 12 and under, will receive a special certificate. Children may also enter the contest.
