Baldwin Harbor Doctor Gets 10 Years for Selling Prescriptions

A doctor from Baldwin Harbor was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in federal prison for illegally selling prescriptions for addictive painkillers and driving to patients’ homes to deliver the pills.

Dr. Leonard Stambler had been convicted last fall at Central Islip federal court of conspiracy to distribute oxycodone and distribution of oxycodone, a highly addictive prescription painkiller.

“Rather than ‘Do No Harm,’ Dr. Stambler acted as a drug dealer, putting thousands of oxycodone pills onto the streets of Long Island for no valid medical reason,” Loretta Lynch, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

Prosecutors said the 63-year-old doctor helped patients sell pills that he prescribed by driving them to drug deals.

Stambler was arrested in 2011 following a crackdown on prescription drug abuse after the Medford drug store massacre.
