soThe Town of Oyster Bay will enter into a partnership with Special Olympics New York, reaching out to those with intellectual disabilities and their families through a wide range of trainings, competitions, health screenings and fundraising events.

“Sports are the great equalizer and participants gain so much through their involvement,” Town Supervisor John Venditto said. “Confidence, socialization skills, friendship are among the by-products of sports — it really just opens up opportunities.”

The Special Olympics New York Fall Sports Conference is the kickoff event for the fall season of Special Olympics and will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center in Bethpage on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 from 5 to 9 p.m.

“The fall season has athletes competing in Soccer, Softball, Golf, Bocce, Equestrian, & Cross Country Running,” said Diane Colonna, Long Island Regional Director of Special Olympics New York. “This conference is an opportunity for veteran coaches to update their coaching certification and for new coaches to become certified.

Rules and Expectations are discussed as well as the competitions that will be taking place within the season. This is a great opportunity for people to get involved with our organization as we welcome anyone interested in lending a hand.”
