Police Department News
Each week in this column I will be including information from Commissioner Jackson of our Police Department. This week he has asked that I include the following:
Nearby Community Burglaries
Residents should be aware of recent burglaries that have occurred in the evening hours in a nearby community, where a subject is seen ringing doorbells and when there is no answer, proceeds to the rear of the residence to forcibly enter the home. Please make sure that all of your doors are locked and if your house has an alarm, please be sure that it is set. When someone rings your doorbell, please check to see if it is someone that you are expecting and/or someone that you know before opening the door. If you suspect something, please call the police by dialing 911.
Motorists And Pedestrian Safety
Motorists are advised to be attentive of increased pedestrian traffic during the summer months including yielding to pedestrians at crosswalks and at sidewalk areas. Motorists are also advised to be mindful for the safety of pedestrians in village parking Fields by adhering to the 15 miles per hour speed restriction.
Keep Garden City Green
Please do your part and recycle as much of your disposed of household items that you can. Our Recycling Division employees will be pleased to collect:
Glass Bottles And Jars
Rinse food from bottles and jars and place in the bottom of your green recycle bucket. Labels do not have to be removed, the glass must be free of food residue. The following are not accepted; Light bulbs, window glass, mirrors, ceramic dishes, mugs, etc.
Aluminum And Metal Containers
Rinse food from all cans and place in the green bucket. Empty paint cans and aerosol cans are also considered recyclable items.
Plastics
Only clean plastic containers with the number 1 or 2 in the triangle on the bottom of the container are acceptable. Examples: milk, soda and detergent containers, etc.
Mixed Paper
Tie newspapers securely, (brown paper bags and junk mail can be included with the newspapers), magazines and phone books. After being tied, place on or next to your green recycle bucket. Books are not acceptable. Please do not use plastic bags to hold your papers.
Metals
Metals should be placed at the curb on your assigned recycling day. Metal includes bicycle frames, metal bed frames, metal car parts, metal cabinets, metal chairs, typewriters, computer hard drives/towers, refrigerators, stoves, other appliances and empty paint cans. Please keep in mind that the law requires that doors be removed from refrigerators and freezers. Any items made of metal including appliances, bikes, tools, snow blowers, lawn mowers, etc., must be put out on your recycling day next to the green bucket. The items will be picked up when your green bucket is collected or in the afternoon with a special collection truck.
E-Waste
Please call the village yard at 516-465-4030 to schedule collection of all e-waste items including computers, televisions, DVD players and VCRs.
Additional Recycling Reminders
Please place your green recycle bucket at the curb before 7 a.m. Your green recycle bucket should only be used for recycling materials.
Never place broken glass in your green recycle bucket. If you have any questions with regard to recycling, please call the village yard at 516-465-4030.
Board Of Trustees Summer Meeting Schedule
During July and August, the board of trustees will meet only one time each month. The next regularly scheduled board of trustee meeting will be on Thursday, Aug. 14 at 8 p.m. This meeting is held in the boardroom at village hall and I encourage all residents to attend board of trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of village issues from a first-hand perspective.
