Summer Concert: Vintage Bliss

Garden City’s Department of Recreation and Parks is happy to announce the schedule of its concert series “Summer Music on the Village Green.” The concert series will be held at the gazebo on the corner of Stewart and Hilton Avenues. Concerts are held on Thursdays beginning at 7:15 p.m. Concerts are held rain or shine. In the event of less than perfect weather, the concert will be held at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall, 295 Stewart Ave.

What’s all the Buzz?

Children and their families will learn about the importance of honey bees, sample natural honey from honeycomb and make a beehive craft. The activity is for children ages five and up. There is a fee of $3 with museum admission (members, $2). Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Ave., Garden City, at 2 p.m. and learn about honey bees. Friday Night Promenade

Enjoy hospitality Garden City style every week this summer as the village’s “Friday Night Promenade” initiative continues on Seventh Street. Festivities kick off at 6 p.m. Seventh Street will be closed to all vehicular traffic and parking beginning at 5:45 p.m.

This week, musical entertainment will be provided by the band Fivestone, performing hit songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s. They’ll be activities for the kids too, including free balloon art and face painting care of balloon twister John Reid and his team between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Tables and chairs will be set up in the street for additional seating and outdoor dining and dinner specials will be offered at local eateries along Seventh Street. The promenade runs every Friday night through September so mark your calendars.

The Little Mermaid JR

In a magical underwater kingdom, Ariel, a beautiful young mermaid, longs to leave her ocean home—and her fins—behind and live in the world above. But first she’ll have to defy her father King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she’s the girl whose enchanting voice he’s been seeking. Journey “under the sea” with Ariel and her aquatic friends in Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR, adapted from the Disney’s 2008 Broadway production. Peruvian Food Festival

The SUMAQ Peruvian Food Festival is coming to the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Garden City, on Saturday, Aug. 16 and Sunday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The SUMAQ, which means “delicious” in the indigenous language of Quechua, will contain Peruvian cuisine by top chefs. The gentle blend of ancient Incan cooking practices and immigrant traditions, from places such as Spain, Africa, China and Japan, have created one of the world’s most delicious cuisines. Guests will enjoy dishes including chancho al palo (roasted pig), paiche (Amazon fish with coconut), chancho al cilindro (pig cooked in a cylinder), quinoa and purple corn tamales, ceviche, anticuchos (cow heart skewers), picarones (Peruvian donuts), and more. Peruvian folk and Latin music will be performed.
Advance online tickets cost $15 (adults) and $7 (children ages 2-12). Admission at the door costs $20 (adults) and $12 (children ages 2-12). Marvelous Movie Matinee

A screening of the 2011 Alexander Payne film The Descendants starring George Clooney and Beau Bridges will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library. Crazy Campfire Day

Celebrate the season with s’mores at the Long Island Children’s Museum from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Children and their families will learn about animals, have snacks and make creative crafts inspired by the campfire.
