On Thursday, Aug. 21 at 6:30 p.m., the Sinai Social Club of the Roslyn-based Temple Sinai will hold a Getting to Know You pizza and pasta dinner.
The evening is an opportunity to mingle with friends and make some new ones. Attendees will also enjoy great company and good food before the documentary Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy at 7:30 p.m.
Engaging, humorous and provocative, the award-winning documentary examines the unique role of Jewish composers and lyricists in the creation of the modern American musical. The film showcases the work of legends such as Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, George and Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. Enjoy performances by Matthew Broderick, Zero Mostel, Nathan Lane and Barbara Streisand as well as interviews with icons Harold Prince and Mel Brooks among others.
Joel Grey narrates the film. The Peabody Award committee called it, “Historically fascinating and grandly entertaining… a tune-filled dissertation on the incalculable influence of Jewish composers.”
The cost for dinner is $18 per person. Reservations are a must so that we have enough food. Just coming to the film? Free to Temple Sinai members. Non-member contribution is $5. Refreshments will be served.
