This fall, speed enforcement cameras are coming to Baylis Elementary School on Woodbury Road in the Syosset School District and Cantiague Elementary School on Cantiague Rock road in the Jericho School District.
Locations for the speed cameras were chosen by the County Engineering Department based upon on-site observations, said Leg. Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury). There will be a sign prior to the school warning of the existence of the device.
“These cameras will only be in use during posted school times,” said Jacobs. “The program will begin at the start of the school year. They will not be in operation, for example, for evening or weekend sports or other activities.”
However, Jacobs said the camera will be in use in the summer during summer school programs.
On June 25, a Nassau County bill that allowed for the deployment of speed cameras to school zones for each of the school districts in Nassau County was signed into law.
The implementation of these enforcement cameras took effect this summer and will be operational on scheduled school days throughout the year.
Jacobs also stated that there will be mobile vans which could be strategically placed at another school in the District, but the permanent ones will then be turned off. There is only one school per district allowed under the program. Signs will be posted if, in fact, another school is going to be monitored by the mobile van.
