Hurricane Preparedness Workshop

hurricaneBe prepared this hurricane season and build a free catastrophe kit on Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theater in Eisenhower Park, 1899 Hempstead Tpke., East Meadow, at 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Long Island Families will work side-by-side with the Allstate Foundation and other crisis management organizations to build free disaster kits they can use to keep safe in the event of a disaster or unforeseen emergency. The free kits will include items proven to keep people safe and prepared, such as a whistle, trash bag, dust mask, hand sanitizer, first aid kit, water bottle, rain poncho and flashlight.

“In addition to having a catastrophe kit readily available for you and your loved ones in the event of a storm, we encourage that residents create an updated home inventory by walking through their house with a video recorder or camera,” said Jaclyn Darrohn, New York Allstate Foundation spokesperson. “Document valuable items and place the list along with other important financial and insurance paperwork in a waterproof container. Be sure to understand your insurance policies and what they cover. If you reside in a flood zone you may require additional coverage through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).”
