Alice in Nanoland
An instructor will read Alice in Nanoland, engage in hands-on science experiments and make a Wonderland-themed science activity to take home. The activity is for ages five and up. The fee is $3 with museum admission (members, $2). Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Ave., Garden City, at 2 p.m.
What the Moon Saw
Inspired by the many tales of Hans Christian Andersen, children and their families will watch puppeteer Sarah Frechette tell the story of a duckling in a world where nature is unpredictable. Watch as a foolish Frog, a clever Ms. Mouse and a pompous Mr. Mole distract the duckling while he is on a quest for a true friend. The activity is for children ages three and up. The Puppetkabob’s perform What the Moon Saw at the Long Island Children’s Museum at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The fee is $5 with museum admission (members, $4). (Also being performed on Friday, Aug. 29.) “Elevate” Art Exhibit
The Firehouse Plaza Art Gallery at Nassau Community College will present the group sculpture exhibit “Elevate” through Nov. 13. “Elevate” examines the exposed beauty of the art process and the unspoken strength in elements tactile and textile.
During the exhibition, Artists Carolyn Salas, Rachel Mica Weiss and Monika Zarczena will use materials that remind the viewer of the forces that drive creation and of how the steps we take in the process are just as important as the end result. From the most delicate thread to the ominous weight of plaster, these artists redefine the supposed limits of their materials. The process frees the substances from their definitions as mechanisms of construction and utility and challenges viewers’ expectations while examining architectural themes. The Firehouse Plaza Art Gallery at Nassau Community College is located in Room 140 of the College Center Building. Its exhibits are free and open to the public. Visual Lecture To Be Given At Library
Art history scholar Louise Cella Caruso will present a free visual art lecture “Musee d’Orsay, Paris” on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 1:30 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library (GCPL) located at 60 Seventh St. Discover the unique transition from train station to art museum and its collection during this illustrated talk. The 1898 Beaux-Arts railway station Gare d’Orsay was shuttered in 1939 due to short platforms unsuitable for longer trains. Originally constructed for the Universal Exposition of 1900, it now houses the largest collection of impressionist & post-impressionist masterpieces in the world by painters including Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Seurat, Sisley, Gauguin and Van Gogh.
Louise Cella Caruso has made numerous presentations throughout the tri-state area. Her background combines bio-nutrition, certification in art and antique appraising, and a degree in communications. She has continued research at museums in the United States and Europe including the Metropolitan and Philadelphia museums of art, the Prado, Louvre, Uffizi, and more.
This public program is funded by Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Garden City residents will be given priority by presenting their GCPL card at the program room door. Non-residents will be accommodated on a space available basis 10 minutes before show time. No saved seats. Limited parking. No tickets are required. For directions, please call 516-742-8405.
