Excel at Woodbury, a boutique physical rehabilitation facility relatively new to the area, has demonstrated that its commitment to care extends beyond the restorative, and into the preventative, at a recent gala designed to promote skin cancer awareness in the community. Guests included local social workers, doctors, physical therapists, and many others committed to the fight against cancer.
“We are care providers,” said Administrator Madeline Moritz. “Healthcare is what we do, so why not do what we can for the larger community as well?”
The event consisted of a wealth of skin-health stations — professional aestheticians offered advice on skin care products, local specialists performed pore-cleansing massages, and Excel’s own fashionistas fitted guests for protective sunglasses at the free giveaway table. World-renowned dermatologist Bruce Smoller, M.D. gave a comprehensive lecture.
“We were incredibly fortunate to hear [Dr. Smoller] speak,” Moritz said. “He is in a class of his own in dermatopathology, and it was such a privilege to host him at Excel.”
Meanwhile, across the hall at the facility’s in-house bakery, the Red Velvet Café, chefs served up a vast bounty of after-dinner treats from their menu, including classic pies, cookies, and, of course, the café’s signature dish: red velvet cupcakes. Guests were even given a few to take home with them in Excel themed goody boxes.
While the event gleamed with all the trimmings of an exclusive, star-studded affair, the focus throughout remained on skin cancer awareness, and the steps that the Woodbury community can take toward protection and prevention.
“If we can spread awareness to just a few of the folks who joined, then we have done our jobs,” Moritz said.
