Post Avenue turned into a movie set last week as film crews came to The Space to shoot Fan Girl, an upcoming movie starring Meg Ryan, Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka, Kara Hayward (Moonrise Kingdom) and “30 Rock’s” Scott Adsit.
Last Thursday evening, residents and local shop owners stood nearby to watch as Ryan, sporting her signature pixie cut, stood in front of the Space talking to costars. Someone called “quiet on set,” and cameras rolled as Ryan walked out of the theater talking a male costar. The two then got into a limo parked in front of the theater.
On Friday, shooting resumed along Post Avenue, including at the parking lot next to Donohue Cecere Funeral Home. One scene involved Ryan loading grocery bags into the back of a Volkswagen and much to her disdain, dropping lemons across the parking lot.
The film crews traveled to Carle Place High School on Saturday afternoon. Carle Place Superintendent noted that the film crew was very respectful of the school’s schedule and that students also got the chance to see what goes on behind the scenes of a movie.
“The filming this weekend started in the evening and went quite late into the night so as not to disturb even our weekend activities,” Flatley said. “Some of our local students have an opportunity to serve as extras which gives them an interesting insight into the entertainment business and the not-so-glamorous world of TV and movie production. It is fun to see them on the screen.”
Fan Girl is about a high school age girl (played by Shipka) navigating social networks and juggling priorities between her fandom for a pop music band and her love of filmmaking.
