In 2010, East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan inaugurated the Over 50 Fair, one celebrating “60 is the new 50.” On Sunday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Kaplan will feature the fifth annual conference, held once again at the Melville Marriott.
“Because Americans are living longer, they should seek to live life to its fullest,” said Kaplan “There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. The purpose of the fair is to show people where to find them.”
The 2014 fair will feature over 90 exhibitors and 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines. Attendees, Kaplan said, can spend the day learning about new products and services directly related to life over age 50. One of the special opportunities available to those who bring their insurance cards with them will be to schedule cardiological testing by Advanced Cadiovascular Diagnostics, one of the event sponsors.
The practice was founded by Dr. Perry Frankel, a Board Certified Cardiologist and Lipidologist. Dr. Frankel has assembled a group of four simple tests that he believes can save lives. He said, “Almost every time we have conducted testing, either at a corporation or at a wellness expo, our team discovers hidden medical problems and can provide a plan for treatment or determine corrective action.”
The diverse group of exhibitors geared towards Baby Boomers and seniors includes local medical and dental practices, financial experts, education providers, weight loss help, psychics, home improvement services, travel agents, and other businesses and organizations appropriate to the target group.
The 30 classes offered at the fair include saving for retirement, iPad apps, stress reduction, meditation, legal hemp, comedy shows, and yoga. Delicious food samples will be available from Mio Posto, Mulberry Street of Seaford and Babylon, and Love and Quiches Gourmet. Other free opportunities include a health assessment, body fat analysis, blood pressure checks, video otoscope exams and a five-minute hand or foot. There will also be photo opportunities with several beauty queens including Ms. New York Senior America 2014, Jane Rubenstein, and Ms. New York Senior America 2013, Virginia Werner.
Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food and cash donations for the Interfaith Nutrition Network (The INN), a local non-profit, to exchange for raffle tickets for a variety of valuable prizes. Non-profit organizations Friendship Force of Long Island and the Town of Huntington Adult Day Care will also be represented at the fair.
Admission tickets are $6 online, $8 at the door, and free for veterans. The Melville Marriott is located at 1350 Old Walt Whitman Rd., Melville. LongIsland.com is another sponsor of the fifth annual Over 50 Fair.
