Last Saturday, a standing-room only crowd greeted the reigning Division V champion Roslyn Bulldogs to their Homecoming match up against Great Neck North. And the fans weren’t disappointed. The Bulldogs put on a mighty offensive show, defeating Great Neck 34-6 as Thomas Davis ran rampant through the Great Neck defense, scoring four touchdowns, including three on running plays.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead and even though Great Neck North scored an early third quarter touchdown, the game was never in doubt as the Bulldogs answered with a touchdown of their own to put the game out of reach.
The scoring began in the first quarter when Richard Woytysiak intercepted a Great Neck pass and ran 27 yards for a touchdown. Jeremy Kaplan followed with an extra point and the route was on.
The star of the day was Davis, who in addition to his four touchdowns, ran for 215 yards on 13 carries, an astounding 16 yards a pop. After the Woytysiak touchdown, the Bulldogs tried for an onside kick. Davis, it appeared, grabbed the ball past the 10 yards that it must travel and he set sail for another touchdown. However, the play was called back as a Great Neck player apparently had touched the ball, giving the possession to the visiting team.
The biggest possession of downs came in the second quarter. Roslyn’s drive to the Great Neck end zone was stalled at the 10-yard line. Great Neck took over and on a key third down play, they fumbled, with Roslyn recovering. The next play, Davis scored on a running play, giving Roslyn a solid lead that they would never relinquish.
Quarterback Adrian Combs steered the offense through an error-free game, passing for 54 yards and a touchdown. On defense, the Bulldogs came up big, with Woytysiak having a monster game, with 12 tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery, in addition to his touchdown run. The brother team of Jake and Marc Shulman dominated the front lines on both offense and defense, helping to open up big holes for Davis, while also having a fumbled recovery each.
Coach Mike Corcoran couldn’t have asked for a better performance from the defending champs as they are now 1-1 in their new conference. Next week, the Bulldogs play Manhasset at a 2 p.m. road game. The crowd at Saturday’s game was large and loud and no doubt, the Bulldogs deserve such support all throughout the year.
