Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and Councilwoman Anna Kaplan hosted the seventh annual Kids Safety Day at Mary Jane Davies Green on Sept. 17. Hundreds of visitors attended the event, which was created to educate and bring attention to child safety through live demonstrations and special presentations. Tables were set up throughout the park with featured activities and educational topics for children. These included: aquatic safety, pet safety, traffic safety, environmental safety, the “Child Safety Act” presented by New York State Senator Jack Martins, skin safety awareness presented by New York State Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel and car seat checks presented by Nassau County Legislator Rich Nicolello. The Manhasset Coalition Against Substance Abuse (CASA) provided internet safety information including tips on how to stay safe on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites. “The advent of the internet has created a whole new realm of kids’ safety,” Supervisor Bosworth said. “By partnering with law enforcement for this event, we were able to provide professional expertise on how children can avoid dangerous situations on the web and social media.” Residents had the opportunity to have their child car seats checked to make sure that they were correctly installed. In addition, parents were able to sign up for a child identification kit which included fingerprints, a photo, and other vital information, for safekeeping. Councilwoman Anna Kaplan, who co-hosted the event, said, “Nothing is more important than our children’s safety. This event goes a long way to ensuring our children are educated and parents are informed on ways to remain safe in public and in their own homes.” The Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department provided education on fire safety. They provided a fire truck and smokehouse simulation to give a hands-on experience to the children. The Town of North Hempstead’s Department of Community Services was on hand to engage the children in arts and crafts projects, including coloring and button making.
