As our soldiers fight to retain our freedoms, many Americans have become disenchanted with our government leaders and do not participate in our democratic process. What a tragedy! Without our individual attention and focus, the ability to influence our direction can be easily manipulated.
For me as a woman, this is particularly true of the reprehensible lies and smear campaign being waged against our State Senator Jack Martins. Not only is he a son, husband, father to four girls, and brother to two sisters, he has supported pay equity for women, stronger protections for domestic violence victims, and legislation to protect our children—very important women’s issues.
This man is a true visionary and a compassionate leader as evidenced by his accomplishments. The re-birth of the Village of Mineola is astounding. Together with his
Board members, he implemented a master plan that is making this Village the pulse of Nassau County. His astute financial leadership turned significant deficits to surplus revenue. His sensitivity and respect to his constituents and mentors, i.e. John Davanzo, is indicative of the man. Isn’t this what we want in our elected representatives?
As individuals, we sometimes find ourselves in conflict with our family and friends on a particular point; however, the relationships remain strong because of enough overall commonality and respect. Stop insulting women’s intelligence by lying, taking information out of context and distorting an impeccable record. Let’s reward quality service by elected officials like Senator Martins and discuss the issues. Most importantly, let’s be sure to exercise our valuable right to vote and use it wisely.
