An East Hampton landlord was sentenced Thursday to probation instead of jail time for secretly filming his tenants, some of whom were minors, with cameras hidden throughout the house.
Donald Torr pleaded guilty in July at Suffolk County court to charges of unlawful surveillance and endangering the welfare of a child.
Prosecutors said the 71-year-old man had seven cameras placed in the bedrooms, bathroom and hallways to record activity in his rental home on Winterberry Lane in East Hampton.
The cameras were connected to a digital video recorder in the basement of the house and the DVR was connected to a router and modem that provided remote viewing access, authorities said.
Judge Barbara Kahn sentenced Torr to five years of probation for the spying charges and three years of probation that will run concurrently for the child endangerment.
Prosecutors said they had recommended Torr be sentenced to the maximum sentence of two and two-thirds to eight years in an upstate prison.
