Scuba Diver Found Dead off Cutchogue

A scuba diver was found dead in the Long Island Sound off the North Fork after authorities went searching for him when he didn’t return from a spearfishing trip on Tuesday evening.

Southold Town Police said Carl Joseph Czajkowski was found in the water off of Duck Point Road in Cutchogue at 7 p.m. after town bay constables and Cutchogue firefighters joined police in the search.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. He was taken to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine his cause of death. Investigators do not believe the case to be suspicious.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Czajkowski was a Hampton Bays resident and metallurgist who studied metals for more than 30 years at Brookhaven National Laboratory, until last year.
