The art exhibit Current Expressions will be on view at the Wisser Memorial Gallery at NYIT New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury during the month of October. The show features eight local artists and photographers including Erica Angiolillo, Roni M. Chastain, Marzena Grabczynska Lorenc, Jill Rader Levine, Flo Siemsen, Susan Tiffen, Maxine Townsend-Broderick, and Debbie Viola. A group donation was given to Long Island Cares, Inc.

The Hempstead Town Board will honor fire service personnel for their dedication to duty and commitment to service in the Town’s annual Firematic Awards ceremony on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion, 1 Washington St. in Hempstead.

The First Presbyterian Church of Levittown is hosting Hand in Hand: Jews and Arabs Working Together to End Violence in Israel on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 4 p.m. 19th. at 4 p.m. Hand in Hand brings together thousands of Jews and Arabs in five schools and communities throughout Israel. Join for a discussion with Hand in Hand founder, Lee Gordon and his colleague Mohamad Marzouk as they discuss the way that they are working together and preparing Jewish and Arab youth to build partnerships and coexistence between Jews and Arabs in Israel. Join the South Shore Audubon Society on a bird walk at Hempstead Lake State Park on Sunday, Oct. 19, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. All are welcome. Walk leaders and other birders and nature enthusiasts will be happy to share their knowledge and experience with you. Bring binoculars. The bird walk is free of charge, but State Park fees apply. The Wantagh Memorial Congregational
Church presents their annual Stone Soup Open Mic on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. to benefit the Freeport Emergency Food Pantry that is run by the Long Island Council of Churches. People of all ages and faiths are welcome to participate and attend. Admission for all participants and audience members is at least one item of non-perishable food. Come in costume if you want. Everyone who comes in costume will be entered into a drawing for a door prize. Choirs, and other groups, as well as soloists, instrumentals, poetry and dramatic readings, magicians and family friendly comedians are welcome. There is a time limit of five minutes per act.
Participants should be prepared to perform something appropriate for all ages as there will be young children present. Since this is a food benefit, songs about food will be the sub-theme, but are not required. If you do not have an accompanist, please bring sheet music. There is one mic stand, a couple of mics, a keyboard, an organ and an upright piano. The church is located at 1845 Wantagh Ave., in Wantagh.
