Four Division Avenue High School seniors have signed national letters of intent to play baseball at local universities next fall. All four players were instrumental in winning the 2014 Nassau County Championship.
Tyler Epple has committed to play baseball at Concordia University. He is a two-year starter as third baseman for the Blue Dragons and was named All-Conference as a junior player. Epple currently boasts a batting average of .357 with 19 RBIs and 24 runs scored.
Three-year starting pitcher and outfielder Anthony Papa committed to LIU Post next fall. Papa was named All-County as a sophomore and All-State third team as a junior. His record is currently 9-0 with a 1.48 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and five complete games. Offensively, Papa batted .384 with 34 RBIs, 36 runs scored, two home runs and a .605 slugging percentage.
LIU Post has also signed Joe Piscitelli, a three-year starting outfielder for Division. During the 2014 season, Piscitelli had a .380 average, scored 20 runs and maintained a .500 slugging percentage.
In addition, James Varela has committed to play for LIU Post next fall. A two-year starter as a pitcher and outfielder, Varela was named All-Conference as a junior. His current record is 6-1 with a 1.05 ERA, 57 strikeouts, 1.10 WHIP and two shutouts. On the offensive front, he was batting .363 with 22 RBIs and scored 21 runs.
