Rain Doesn’t Dampen Dragon Spirit

Untitled-2

All day rain on Saturday, Nov. 1, moved Westbury’s Homecoming parade inside, but the atmosphere was still lively and festive as students, teachers, staff and community members crowded inside the high school gym to show off their Dragon pride. Several groups performed for the packed house, including the high school and middle school marching bands, cheerleaders and high school flag team.

The dismal weather forced the classes to make a quick reconfiguration of their floats, which are traditionally part of the parade. The displays centered around a “Broadway Show” theme with the middle school choosing an Aladdin theme; freshman class choosing Cats, sophomores choosing Hairspray, juniors choosing Lion King and seniors going with Wicked.

The Homecoming Court, which was voted on by the student body, was also presented at the festivities.

Ms. Ninth Grade was Maya Campbell-Monclova, escorted by Gerardy Delva; Ms. Tenth Grade was Ariela Arias escorted by Brian Vanegas; Ms. Eleventh Grade was Anaphterly Bozor escorted by Adrian Rowe; Ms. Twelfth Grade was Yajaira Reyes escorted by Gaddy Desrosiers. The Homecoming King was Raeco Jackson and the Queen was Niara Allen. The grand marshall was Diane Cohen, who recently retired from Westbury High School and was the former principal’s secretary since 1994.

At 2 p.m., the varsity football team faced off against Wantagh. The rain presented an additional challenge for the team, which lost 0-14.
The festivities concluded with the Homecoming dance in the high school gym later that evening. Earlier in the day, there was also a pancake breakfast in the high school cafeteria, and a recognition ceremony for Ernest Strada and Dr. Irvin Eannaccone, who were awarded the J. Alfred Cannon Alumni of Distinction award.
