Sultans of String to play Our Times Coffeehouse
On Friday, Nov. 21, Canadian string supergroup Sultans of String will be appearing at Garden City’s Our Times Coffeehouse. Nominated as “World Group of the Year” at the 2014 SiriusXM Independent Music Awards, the Sultans of String thrill their audiences with their global tapestry of Spanish flamenco, Arabic folk, Cuban rhythms and French Manouche Gypsy-jazz.
Fresh from a stellar performance with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in late October, these artists create a musical fusion of acoustic strings and electronic wizardry to create layers and depth of sound. They have brought their unique blend of global music to audiences around the world, including the Celtic Connections Festival in England, Birdland Jazz Club, Canada’s National Arts Centre, and Folk Alliance in Memphis, TN. “Energetic and exciting music from a band with talent to burn,” declared Maverick Music Magazine, “the very epitome of world music; no boundaries, no rules…the sort of band and music that would rip up any festival in the country.”
Since their formation only five years ago, they have been riding a wave of success, hitting No. 1 on the World/International music charts in Canada and winning Instrumental Group of the Year. Doors open at 7:15 p.m. that evening for ticket sales. The suggested donations are $15 adults; children under 12, $6; sorry, no pre-sales are available. Our Times Coffeehouse is in the Ethical Humanist Society building on Old Country Road, two miles west of Meadowbrook Parkway next to the blue water tower.
