The autumn varsity sports season is in the books in Oyster Bay. It was a great season that saw most of the teams participate in post-season play. The boys and girls cross country teams were Conference Champions and went to the state championships. The girls tennis doubles team won the New York State Championship.
Several other fine young athletes distinguished themselves and were chosen by the OBHS coaches as Athletes of the Month for November.
Volleyball Coach Diana Boucher chose Yamile Marles as her Athlete of the Month, saying, “Yamile has worked very hard this season. She has played numerous positions and done well in all. Yamile was a go-to player in a time of need. She averaged three kills a game and two blocks. Yamile was aggressive at the net, which allowed our team to set up offensively. Her spirit and confidence was contagious. Players look up to Yamile and enjoy playing with her. Great job this season.”
The choice for the field hockey team came down to two players. Coach AnnMarie Rudd said, “Anna Montick is a junior and three-year varsity goalie for Oyster Bay Field Hockey. This season she has protected our net with 86 saves and is number five on the list for Nassau County Field Hockey Save Leaders. Most recently, during the Nassau County Class C Playoffs, she had an astonishing 25 saves against the Carle Place Frogs. Not only is Montick a standout goalie, but a leader on the field. Her communication skills have kept our defense unit strong and she has helped push the team through each game minute.
“Kelsey Doyle is a senior captain and four-year varsity player,” Rudd continued. “She is our center forward with 13 season goals and four assists. Not only is she a starter, but also part of our offensive corner unit and overtime team. Her passion for field hockey has made her a confident player and her strong hits have left opponents in shock. She is a great leader on the field and has a big heart for the sport. Doyle is looking to continue her love for field hockey on the collegiate level next year.”
When asked to nominate a boys soccer player for Athlete of the Month, Coach Tim Brady said, “Boys soccer would like to nominate the ‘team’ as athletes of the month for November. The Varsity Boys Team finished third out of the 12 team conference and earned the number one seed in the Class B County playoff format, where they ultimately finished as Class B County runner-ups to the Wheatley School. The team was also selected as the recipient of the Team Sportsmanship Award in their 12 team conference as voted on by the coaches in that conference. The team this season focused on the ‘we’ instead of the ‘me’ as they worked towards team success.”
Coach Joe Knoll made his choice saying, “the varsity football team recognizes Nick Orlowski as its Athlete of the Month. Nick is a senior co-captain and a two-year, two-way starter who has played as a running back, receiver, outside linebacker and special team’s player. He played wherever the team needed him and excelled at all the positions. Nick led the team in rushing yards and all purpose yards. He was the leading rusher in six out of our eight games and got the tough yards when we needed them. On defense he solidified our perimeter defense and was a tenacious tackler from his outside linebacker position. He was a good captain, an excellent leader that has earned the respect of both his teammates and opposing teams’ players. With his success on the field and confidence in the classroom, he has developed a dynamic personality. Regardless of the situation, our team knew that if we had him, we had a chance for success.”
