The Farmingdale State women’s basketball team dropped a non-conference game against Baruch, 86-64, in the opening round of the Amherst Tournament on Saturday night. The Rams now stand at 2-2 on the season, while the Bearcats improved to 1-1.
Trailing 13-6 in the opening minutes, Farmingdale State used a 3-point play by senior guard Camille Romero and a pair of free-throw’s by junior guard Andrea Desvignes to close within two.
After the Rams cut the deficit to 25-23 with 7:16 remaining, Baruch closed the half on a 19-4 run to take a 44-27 lead into the break. Romero tallied 11 points and Desvignes had 10 points in the opening half.
Farmingdale State junior forward Marlaina Sherman started the second half with back-to-back scores to cut the deficit to 44-31.
After a pair of Romero free-throw’s pulled the Rams within 11, an 11-2 Bearcats run extended their advantage to 61-42 with 10:53 left to play. Romero scored the next 15 points for
Farmingdale State but Baruch held a double-digit lead the remainder of the game. The Rams dropped the opening game of the tournament, 86-64.
Romero led all scorers with 28 points, including 17 in the second half, while Desvignes had 10 points, four assists and three steals.
Senior forward Sheridan Taylor recorded a double-double with 18 points (9-for-12) and 17 boards for Baruch.
Following the loss, the Rams would face off against Mount Holyoke in a consolation game.
Farmingdale State earned a 62-55 victory over Mount Holyoke on Sunday afternoon. The women’s basketball team improved to 3-2 on the year, while the Lyons fell to 1-4.
Leading 32-30 with 16:14 remaining, Farmingdale State senior guard Nicole Lanteri connected on a 3-pointer to increase the Rams advantage to five. On Mount Holyoke’s next possession, senior guard Kate Karraker was fouled on a 3-point attempt and cut the deficit back to two after converting all three at the line.
Tied 41-41 with 10:49 left to play, an 8-1 Farmingdale State run over the next 2:40 highlighted by a pair of Andrea Desvignes 3-pointers gave the Rams a seven point edge, 49-42.
With less than four minutes remaining, Karraker pulled Mount Holyoke within three points, but five straight points from Camille Romero and a pair of free-throw’s by Jeanette Spillane put the Rams ahead 60-50. Farmingdale State held on for the 62-55 non-conference victory over Mount Holyoke.
Desvignes had 19 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Romero also scored 19 but added six assists and four steals.
