The Roslyn Rotary Club honored Roslyn High School senior Evan Mester as the Student of the Month at its luncheon on Nov. 20. Mester’s community service has included working at Temple Sinai in the office providing administrative support, coordinating a bake sale for students and offering support in the classroom when needed.
He volunteered at a food bank in Memphis, TN, and was also involved with the Teem Tzedakah Foundation, raising funds through community events; in Generation Equality, a teen advocacy club dedicated to issues including equal rights; and assisted with an art installation in a community center in Garden City.
Mester is an active member of Roslyn Temple Youth Group through which he volunteered at Hope Lodge in NYC serving food to cancer patients, worked at Prospect Park with homeless children, purchased food and donated it to organizations that feed the hungry, worked on a recycling project and created containers for the Hebrew Union College Soup Kitchen. He led activities for children from the NYC Department of the Homeless, volunteered at holiday party for teens with developmental issues from St. Christopher’s Home and volunteered at various temple functions.
At Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center he peer mentored a student in English as a second language, helped restore homes that were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, worked with Island Harvest to feed the hungry and worked with adults with early onset Alzheimer’s. Mester also volunteered at the Unity Shop in Santa Barbara, CA, an organization that offers groceries and clothing for people facing homelessness, and through the Mitzvah Corp., National Federation of Temple Youth, Mester volunteered at a school in Haifa, Israel working with children afflicted with cerebral palsy.
