New Suffolk County Area Code Will be 934

934

The area code for new Suffolk County phone numbers starting in two years will be 934, New York State regulators announced Friday.

Telephone companies will begin using the new three-digit area code for customers on eastern Long Island beginning in the second half of 2016, according to the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC).

The North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) assigned the new area code after determining that 631 is about to run out of assignable numbers.

The 631 area code has served Suffolk since it was split in 1999 from the 516 area code that has served Nassau County.

Once the new area code is implemented, 10-digit dialing will be required for all callers within the county—including those with existing 631 numbers calling those with the same area code.

The PSC announced last week that it had opted to against geographically splitting the area code by dividing the county and instead will roll out the new area code as an overlay, meaning existing 631 numbers will remain the same.
