A timeless American classic is coming to the East Hills next month, as the Sid Jacobson Community Players will present a production of The Sound of Music. The dates of the production are: Saturday, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m.


This rendition will be directed by Rich Buckley. Musical director is Steve Belfer. Producer sponsors are Roslyn area residents Howard and Roz Kroplick and Ellen and Larry Vigneaux.

Numerous other Roslyn area residents will be part of the production. Lisbeth Wolgel will play Mother Abbess, Ellen Vigneaux will play Frau Schmitt, Cheryl Korsen will play Baroness Elberfeld and Roz Kroplick will play Sister Sophia. Hallie ArbitalJacoby, Cheryl Korsen and Michelle Herson will also play the roles of ensemble nuns.

The lead roles of Maria and Captain von Trapp will be played, respectively, by Michele Mazzocco and Rich Buckley.

With music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, The Sound of Music first opened in 1959 and has been in demand ever since. The movie version, released in 1965, won five Academy Awards and was the final collaboration between the legendary team of Rodgers and Hammerstein. The musical tells the story of the von Trapp family of Austria and their struggles to escape central Europe during the tumultuous years of the late 1930s.

Tickets are $22 for members and $20 for seniors and students. Special group rates of 10 and more attendees are available.
