Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano honored Isaiah Bird, and Bob Eslick, Executive Director of Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc. Citations were presented at the Kids Helping Kids dinner gala where the organization raised thousands of dollars that will be utilized by their “Making Warmth of a Difference” program. Mangano commended Bob Eslick for “teaching the kids of today to be the leaders of tomorrow.” This year marks the 11th year for the apparel program, which has benefited thousands of children and families on Long Island and beyond. The program focuses on collecting new and branded winter apparel rather than used clothing to give to children and families in need.
Kids volunteered their services by separating and packing thousands of units of winter apparel to distribute to children and families who do not always receive something special, new branded apparel that will keep them warm. Since 2004, Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc. has distributed $1.8 million in branded winter apparel.
Named as this year’s honoree, Bird won the hearts of all in attendance at the gala, and the hearts of anyone who has been lucky enough to meet the Long Island youngster. Although born with no legs, he is excelling in sports with his passion being wrestling. Bird was chosen as this year’s honoree because although born with challenges, he perseveres and inspires all children and adults he meets.
“The kids involved in Kids Helping Kids are amazing role models for Nassau County’s youth, and Isaiah is one of the most powerful role models we have had the privilege to meet,” said Mangano.
“Kids Way has collected and donated thousands of new winter apparel to the Nassau County Department of Social Services. They are an outstanding example to young children in showing them how to reach out and care about children less fortunate than themselves,” added Dr. John Imhof, Commissioner of the Nassau County Department of Social Services.
