After a months-long investigation, authorities arrested a former volunteer fireman in connection with the arson of a historic home in Oyster Bay.
Police said Christopher Zaino, 20, is suspected in the torching of the Mill Pond House, a house that dates back to the 1600s and is the oldest of 40 historical homes within the Town of Oyster Bay. Cops said Zaino was a volunteer fireman with the Bayville Fire Department at the time he set the blaze.
Zaino is charged with third-degree arson and was taken into the First District Court in Hempstead this morning.
According to the original arson report, the fire occurred on March 22, 2014 at 9:25 p.m. One hundred firefighters from the Oyster Bay, Atlantic Steamer, Locust Valley and Bayville fire departments battled the blaze and successfully extinguished the fire—however, much of the historic house was destroyed.
