Senior guard Ryan Cunningham produced a career-high 17 points and the MacArthur varsity boys basketball team extended its winning streak to three games with a 53-44 victory against Island Trees on Dec. 23.
The Generals improved to 11-0 against Levittown schools over the past nine seasons.
MacArthur (4-2, 2-1 league) held a double-digit first-half lead, but Island Trees whittled it to three points early in the fourth quarter. Cunningham then took over. He drilled three three-pointers in a two-minute, 43-second span as the Generals took a 43-33 lead.
Senior forward Phil Carucci followed with an offensive rebound and putback for a 12-point advantage with 3:36 remaining. Seniors Brian Perez, Jack Wall and Greg Schachter combined to go 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final minute to secure the victory.
Senior forward Greg Baumstein contributed a season-high eight points.
MacArthur improved to two games over .500 for the first time since finishing the 2011-12 season with an 11-7 record. The current three-game winning streak is the team’s longest since January 2012.
